Performance is a feature - Instrumentation 2.0
Have you ever had a database performance issue, but been met by the DBA telling you that the database looks "green"? Let me tell you a secret: "It does not have to be like this!" By instrumenting your code using JDBC features and the Oracle end-to-end metrics, you can follow the code path down to a single push of the button. Users feel the variance, not the averages. Averages and system level statistics is all about capacity, but performance is really about the user experience. This is the reason behind the quote "Performance is a feature". Performance must be built into your application, for instance by instrumentation. The JDBC 4.0 specification introduced a new method "setClientInfo", which together with database features such as the Oracle End-to-end Metrics and Oracle Extended trace gives you a method for working with performance, both during development and in production.
